The Ultimate Pinging Solution

Did you realize that anytime you edit a post after publication WordPress pings any services you have listed in your ping settings… again?! If you’re like me, you make the odd change here and there. Or worse, you find yourself in the position I was just in where I have had to go back and edit some of my older posts after finally upgrading my blog and discovering how much I detested the Autop filter.

I was madly pinging the blogosphere every time I saved during an edit. “Hello World from Stylehack… again! Here are ancient posts I just know you want to read!” [Yeah yeah, they're old but still have some valid content so I didn't want to just delete them.]

Okay, enough said — the scenario for disaster is set (a.k.a. spamming ping services).

Fortunately, I found a great solution, the UP Smart Update Pinger plugin!

If you hate the WordPress AutoP Filter as much as I do…

Shut the damn thing off using this plug-in:

Disable-WPAutoP

I’d really like to rant some more about the type of development teams that get too big for their britches [cough mozilla cough] like the WP team has done and refuse to admit something that JUST DOESN’T WORK IS A BUG… or at least a bad choice… but, my blood pressure is already too high from wasting yet another afternoon on what should have been a 15 minute posting process.

Have I mentioned lately that I hate the Mozilla Dev Team?

I fully support the Open Source Initiative, both in word and deed (financially). AND, I’m an all purpose hater of sell-outs. “-)

‘Nuff said.

WordPress 1.5 is Here!

The long awaited version of WordPress with an Admin Dashboard is here! And it’s so much more… wow. Just a quick overview of the enhancements I know I’ll make use of:      Whitelisting Approved Commentors (it’s automatic!)      Blacklisting Spammers (goodbye Poker posters)      Ability to add a normal web page to WP      Enhanced Templating System And just in time… I have a client for which I was starting to mull over what CMS might work, just need a simple system for her, nothing fancy. YES. WordPress will do very nicely. And I think I might fix my sloppy design and hacked template for this new version, maybe even redesign things. Yeah, I don’t need a whole 6 hours of sleep a day… “-) Get the new WP here:   http://wordpress.org/development/2005/02/strayhorn/

BloggerCon III :: Interesting Blogging Resources

Filed under:
Stumbled across a blog by the moderator of the Newbies Discussion at BloggerCon III — Rebecca MacKinnon, “Newbies” Postmortem. She’s thoughtfully provided some great resource links on her blog as well as started a wiki — BlogWiki — to collect resources for new and not-so-new bloggers. Both sites are definitely worth a visit. I’ve been particularly interested in the use of blogs in business and community, so her thoughtful comments were enlightening. Plus, lazy as I am, I now have a place to start my education in terms of how I might help my clients use blogging to meet some of their communication and project needs. If you haven’t cast your eye at the BloggerCon blog, you might want to hop on over. .. Link to Blogging for Newbies session. Other sessions involved (what else) politics, education, moblogging and making money (something dear to us all) — of course, all in relation to Blogging. “-)

RSS Reader in Thunderbird 0.8

Filed under:
Okey dokey, installed the update to Tbird tonight to test the RSS Reader feature (was using 0.5 - nothing like being behind - wink). So far so good! It’s pretty straightforward and simple, like the newsreader in NN 4x. No bells and whistles, but it runs in my preferred email program and is easy enough to use. Other than that, I might try my hand at Feedreader because it can be customized and branded. There are a couple others I downloaded to look at also but won’t mention yet; I do know I prefer something that runs on my computer and not through a browser — at least to begin with. Being lazy I’ll probably stick with the RSS Reader in Tbird. grin. Image1.jpg
