Styleswitcher Mod to WP October 16, 2004 @ 11:02 AM
Printed from: http://www.stylehack.com/wordpress/index.php/2004/10/16/styleswitcher-mod-to-wp/
Ed. Note: I removed my complaining because I found a k i l l e r plugin called the iG:Syntax Hiliter that uses the GeSHi Highlighter. I am thrilled! There are just a couple of things I need to work out, probably “user error”, but I’m going to contact the author for help while singing praises galore! By the way, if you aren’t familiar with GeSHi, be sure to check it out! [rev 9:56 pm CST]
Ok, I’ve done a bit of fiddling this morning even though I swore I was “grounded” off the computer all weekend. Fiddling means adding a PHP Styleswitcher to this installation of WP, based on the one found at ALA.
Proviso: If you try the Plain Jane style, it actually loads the print.css file for right now which means no navigation! The only way to get back is to use the back button on your browser.
First thing to report: I added the runPHP plugin and activated; don’t bother, it not only didn’t work it actually prevented me from editing or deleting a test post including PHP. Since it was just a test of the switcher link, it’s no big deal and I didn’t bother to see what or why. Just deactivated it.
Second thing to report: I hate that friggin’ Quicktags and that is the first thing I am going to shut off. What kind of idiots want that formatting their posts??? Just one more thing to slow me down and mess things up.
Ok, here’s “How I did it’ re Styleswitcher:
1. Create the switchter.php file (repeated here as a courtesy - see ALA link above for details):

2. Create a my-hacks.php file to declare the stylesheet variables I wanted to use (don’t forget to activate this legacy feature in your admin panel:

What I wanted to do here was not only define the stylesheets available to use, but also assign a Title that can be used for linking and even in the header tags if so desired.
3. Ok, here’s the clunky part… I had to change 3 (4) files…

ACK! In FF0.9.3 it’s breaking my back button, so if I go to plain jane I am stuck unless I have opened in new tab or window or go clear my cookies so I can get back to being *Plunged.* lol
No, I can’t fix your script… I have a *broken* Moblog to obsess over at EE you know. :^i
What if Plain Jane were just totally plain, but with navigation, for screen and your print styles were just that, media=”print”. Wouldn’t that work better?

Lovely lovely lovely. I really want to try a style switcher too. You are so NOT a slacker!

Well, need I remind you what I think of FF lately? evil glare. I warned you, and I mean ~you~ Farron (hehehe)… I put that up there specifically so you would read it before you tried it. shaking head. I specifically said the Plain Jane style is the print css (that comes with WP) and -ahem- does not include navigation.
So yeah, a typical plainly styled stylesheet ~would~ include navigation. So get right on that eh? grin.
[No one tell the Brat that was my clever method of shooing "some people" away so they can't get back. hahahaha! wink wink JK and all that jazz.]

But, but, you said:
“Proviso: If you try the Plain Jane style, it actually loads the print.css file for right now which means no navigation! The only way to get back is to use the back button on your browser.”
You didn’t tell me you broke the dern back button… [seeeeee, I did too read a little of the page before commenting! nanner nanner]
Wanna borrow the button I need to create for my publishing page down the cyber-street. “Best viewed on my monitor, my system & in my browser of choice!” ???
Gotta tell you, except for my obsession with the unneeded at this point Moblog mod, I am liking EE more and more all the time! They are still working out a few things but it seems to be *playing nicie, nice* for me.
And where oh where is preview for comments in WP? I think I noticed that missing in Splash of Style, too. No wait, dT’s comments are still off, so it musta been in Cafe Lisa.

[keeping up with the Brat]
Can I help it if your FF install doesn’t keep a cache of the page like my Opera install does? My backbutton works just fine. “-) Actually that’s another issue I have with WP… in Admin it doesn’t force a refresh of the pages properly so I have to manually refresh if I want to see a list of all entries after I make a new one (as an example). I’ll have to go in and fix that. Sheesh.
Yes! I want that button! Send it to me please. “-)
I didn’t get EE free because I was being noble; I doubt I’m willing to pay for it at this point. You know me, I’d rather complain about this and hack it to hell and back so that any upgrade is a nightmare. hahaha.
I do intend to seriously modify this more, as in add comment previews (wink). And the email to blog thing, I’ve wanted that for a long time as you well know. The other thing I want to do is figure out how to auto create a PDF. There’s a plugin for Nucleus, I think it is, that I was going to look at and see if I could figure out how that whole PDF thing works.

Just reading this made my head hurt! But it looks wonderful….
I’m running FF 1.0 PR and everything is perfect as it relates to seeing, reading, and navigating your blog.
This looks TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blah, blah, blah YIKES a C-A-T??????
Contents are too deep for my poor brain to absorb but from a technical aspect, way too cool you figured all this out. Again, myself is duly impressed.
